Pink Floyd leader Roger Waters has been on a malicious and intensive campaign against Israel and the Jewish people for years. His 2013 “The Wall Live Tour” became the highest grossing tour ever by a solo artist, (eclipsing Springsteen and Madonna), raking in more than 450 million dollars. During that tour, Waters wore Nazi uniforms on stage, mocked the Jewish people and urged all artists to boycott Israel. Now, Waters is once again back on a new tour of the United States and Canada, urging more boycotts of Israel. It is time that all those concerned about human rights expose his hatred and anti-democrtic ideals and take a stand - once and for all.
Roger Waters is universally recognized as the de-facto leader of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement, a political warfare group with inhumane tactics used to demonize, delegitimize and isolate the State of Israel economically, culturally, and politically. Waters has been a leader of this campaign within the cultural sphere, accusing Israel of committing "crimes" of "apartheid," "ethnic cleansing and wielding "abhorrent and draconian control" over the Palestinian population." In a Guardian article entitled "Tear down this Israeli wall" (March 11, 2011), Waters likens Israel to apartheid South Africa, while in 2013 he appeared on stage in a Nazi-like uniform, with a pig-shaped balloon emblazoned with a Star of David and symbols of dictatorial regimes. Indeed, Waters has a history of espousing antisemitic conspiracy theories, speaking about the "extraordinary" power of the "Jewish lobby" and even comparing Israeli treatment of Palestinians to the Nazi treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.
The United States, Canada the European Parliament and other democratic nations have all defined this activity as antisemitism!
Waters lobbies artists to cancel their shows in Israel, and attempts to humiliate and destroy the careers of artists who preform. Most recently, the former Pink Floyd bassist attempted to persuade rock band Radiohead to boycott the Jewish state, though his attempts failed due to a principled position of the rock band. Waters' anti-Israel and antisemitic activities have led human rights and community leaders to accuse Waters of promoting "classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theories" and asserting that his “views on Israel are in fact colored by offensive and dangerous undercurrents of anti-Jewish sentiment.” As Waters begins his tour to promote his latest album, "Is this the life we really want?", it is time that the those who wish to defend human rights and democratic principles, take a stand and not remain silent in the face of brazen antisemitism.
While criticism of Israeli government policies -- like criticism of all government policies -- is not only legitimate, but a necessary and productive means of ensuring a thriving democratic society and vigorous pluralistic debate. However, BDS activists seek to conflate legitimate criticism of Israel with the delegitimization of Israel in the international arena. By exploiting the rhetoric of “human rights,” "social justice" and other universal moral principles, BDS activists portray Israel as inherently racist, thereby calling into question the very existence of the Jewish state, seeking to cast it as the pariah among nations. The tactics of utilizing double standards and strategies of demonization and delegitimization are all expressions of contemporary antisemitism.
